Pralhad Joshi and Nitin Gadkari take joint hydrogen vehicle ride

Hyderabad: Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi and Nitin Gadkari took a joint ride in a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle on Tuesday to highlight the government’s push for green hydrogen and clean mobility.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari travelled together in a Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle. The demonstration aimed to showcase the viability of hydrogen-based transport solutions.

Pralhad Joshi drove the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle from Bharat Mandapam to Nitin Gadkari’s residence. Officials said the ride underscored the Centre’s commitment to promoting zero-emission mobility technologies in the country.

The ministers used the occasion to highlight the role of green hydrogen in India’s clean energy transition. They said hydrogen-powered vehicles could support long-term goals on emissions reduction and energy security.

The Toyota Mirai is a second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. It generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

The process emits only water vapour as a by-product. As a result, the vehicle produces no tailpipe emissions.

Officials said the Mirai offers a driving range of about 650 km. It also allows refuelling in under five minutes, which makes it comparable to conventional vehicles in daily use.

The ministers said such hydrogen fuel cell vehicles demonstrated the potential of clean mobility solutions. They added that wider adoption could help reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

The government continues to promote alternative fuel technologies as part of its broader clean transport strategy. Officials said hydrogen mobility would play a key role alongside electric and biofuel-based vehicles.
