Rajnath Singh lays foundation for naval testing facility in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art naval testing facility at the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory. The project aims to strengthen India’s indigenous defence capabilities.

The upcoming Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT) will boost naval research and testing. As a result, India can design, develop and test advanced systems within the country.

Addressing scientists and defence personnel, he said the naval testing facility will reduce dependence on foreign testing centres. Moreover, it will support work on propulsion systems, noise reduction and stealth technologies.

Naval testing facility to boost defence self-reliance

Rajnath Singh described the project as a key step under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. He added that the facility will support future naval engineering and maritime defence systems.

During his visit, he reviewed ongoing projects at NSTL. He also witnessed demonstrations of advanced underwater systems, including torpedoes, naval mines and autonomous underwater vehicles.

In addition, a live demonstration of swarm AUVs showcased India’s growing strength in autonomous maritime operations. This, in turn, highlights the country’s focus on next-generation warfare.

He also praised research in lithium-ion batteries and other defence technologies. According to him, these innovations will improve operational efficiency and support naval forces at sea.

Senior officials, including Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan and Navy Chief Dinesh K Tripathi, attended the event.

The Large Cavitation Tunnel will serve as a strategic national asset. Once operational, it will help test next-generation ships, submarines and underwater platforms. Therefore, it will strengthen India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.
