Save Telangana campaign: BJP accuses BRS and Congress of pushing state into debt

Hyderabad: BJP Telangana president Ramchander Rao alleged that Telangana had slipped from a prosperous state into a debt-ridden one under successive BRS and Congress governments.

Rao made the remarks while delivering a PowerPoint presentation as part of the party’s campaign titled “Save Telangana, Vote for BJP.” On the occasion, he also released a campaign song, Save Telangana. Addressing party workers, Rao alleged that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi looted the state for ten years and claimed that Congress leaders were now following the same path.

He said the scale of corruption during the decade-long BRS rule would become evident if party leaders answered questions raised by the public. Similarly, he argued that questioning Congress ministers would expose alleged irregularities during the last two-and-a-half years. According to Rao, the Congress and BRS were no different in their approach to governance. He accused both parties of plundering public money and burdening the state with debt.

Save Telangana campaign highlights fiscal concerns

Highlighting fiscal issues, Rao said municipalities across Telangana together carried a debt burden of ₹3,600 crore. He alleged that tax terrorism prevailed in the state and criticised the Congress government for introducing free bus travel for women while operating what he described as poorly maintained buses.

Further, Rao claimed that the Congress government, despite not completing three years in office, had already pushed Telangana into a debt of ₹80,000 crore. He said such borrowing would severely affect future development and public welfare.

Later, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy also criticised the Congress government. He accused it of relying heavily on the sale of government lands and excessive borrowing to manage finances. According to him, the Congress and BRS together had turned a wealthy state into a debt-laden one.

Kishan Reddy claimed the state government lacked funds even to maintain basic infrastructure such as streetlights. He questioned why Telangana had no new airports while neighbouring Andhra Pradesh had several. Referring to the BRS regime, he alleged that the party focused on looting rather than development during its ten years in power.

He further claimed Telangana had become a “golden goose” for the Congress, alleging that funds were diverted from the state for elections elsewhere. Kishan Reddy asserted that only the BJP could protect Telangana’s interests and said voting for the party would restore the state’s prosperity.
