New Delhi: The government said the Skill India Mission has trained, enrolled or engaged millions of people through its flagship programmes. It also highlighted improved employment, entrepreneurship and industry-focused skill development across the country.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Shri Jayant Chaudhary shared the details in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The ministry said the Skill India Mission operates through schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) and the Craftsmen Training Scheme through Industrial Training Institutes.
According to the ministry, more than 1.65 crore candidates have received training under PMKVY since its launch. Meanwhile, over 36.58 lakh people enrolled under JSS, 52.98 lakh joined NAPS and more than 1.07 crore enrolled through ITIs between 2018 and 2025.
Skill India Mission reports stronger employment outcomes
The ministry said PMKVY placed 24.3 lakh candidates from 56.89 lakh certified trainees under its first three phases. As a result, the placement rate reached 42.8 percent. However, PMKVY 4.0 now focuses on industry-linked training and on-the-job learning instead of placement tracking.
An independent evaluation by the Arun Jaitley National Institute of Financial Management found improved employment and income outcomes under PMKVY 4.0. Moreover, the share of employed and self-employed candidates increased from 26.6 percent before training to 45.4 percent after training. In addition, many beneficiaries reported higher incomes after certification.
The ministry also highlighted entrepreneurship programmes through NIESBUD and the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship. Furthermore, the PM Vishwakarma scheme supports artisans through skill training, toolkits and collateral-free credit. The Swavalambini programme has trained 1,200 women under entrepreneurship awareness and 602 women under entrepreneurship development.
Besides this, the ministry said Skill India Digital Hub supports digital enrolment, certification and course discovery. It has also introduced new courses in artificial intelligence, robotics, drone technology, mechatronics and the Internet of Things. Finally, the ministry said partnerships with IBM, Microsoft, Autodesk, AWS and Shell are helping strengthen industry-ready skills.
