Students hospitalized from rat bites in Gurukul hostel, Harish Rao targets congress

Hyderabad: A controversy erupted after three students from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Gurukul Hostel in Alampur, Jogulamba Gadwal district, suffered rat bites and needed hospital treatment. The incident has revived criticism of hostel conditions in Telangana.

BRS MLA T. Harish Rao accused the Congress government of neglect. He said students in Gurukul Hostels continue to endure unsafe surroundings. Reports of dog attacks, snake bites and even electric shocks have added to parents’ concerns. Rao argued that these repeated incidents show serious failures in hostel management.

Harish Rao seeks accountability from Congress

The MLA reminded Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of earlier promises to personally monitor hostels. He also questioned why contractors providing poor food and inadequate facilities had not faced punishment. Rao said such unfulfilled assurances weakened public trust.

Calling the situation shameful, he demanded a state-wide special drive to improve hostels. He asked the government to hold a high-level review, identify unsafe facilities and implement immediate safety checks. Rao stressed that student safety and dignity should remain above political campaigning.

Wider concerns over Gurukul Hostels

Education experts and parent associations have also raised concerns. They say many Gurukul Hostels struggle with sanitation, overcrowding and lack of supervision. Civil society groups urged the government to prioritise health and safety measures along with academic support.

Background

Gurukul Hostels in Telangana serve thousands of students from marginalised communities, offering free education, food and accommodation. The institutions are considered crucial for social equity, but repeated complaints about infrastructure and safety have tarnished their reputation.
