Telangana plans to drain Singur Dam for phased safety repairs

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to undertake safety repairs at Singur Dam in two phases, following warnings from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDMA). The Irrigation Department is preparing to drain the reservoir and has begun the process of seeking official approval from the state.

On Wednesday, officials held a review meeting at Jalasoudha led by Engineer-in-Chief Amjad Hussain. Kamareddy CE Srinivas, O&M ENC Srinivas Reddy, and other engineers discussed technical concerns and finalised proposals to send to the government.

Singur Dam safety repairs to follow NDMA warnings

The NDMA raised serious concerns after a pre-monsoon inspection this year. It noted damage to the upstream revetment and soil slopes near the Full Reservoir Level (FRL), calling the dam’s condition “highly critical.” The agency urged the state to act immediately.

Following these findings, the State Dam Safety Committee and irrigation officials visited the dam site and conducted further evaluations. The committee resolved to carry out the repairs in two stages, based on NDMA’s recommendations.

Singur Dam holds a full capacity of 29 TMC and spans 7 km on both sides. Roughly 900 metres of soil revetment was found damaged due to wave action. An earlier estimate pegged repair costs at ₹16 crore during the previous administration.

Currently, the water level stands at 522 metres. Officials plan to lower it gradually—by one foot per day—so that repairs can begin safely. The committee estimates the draining process will take more than 20 days to reach the target level.
