Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dr. Dasoju Sravan accused the Congress government in Telangana on Friday of manipulating the upcoming Telangana municipal elections through political harassment and misuse of state power.
Sravan alleged that the ruling party had undermined constitutional values across the state. He said elections meant to strengthen democracy were instead being conducted in an authoritarian and disgraceful manner. “The democratic process has turned into a mockery,” he said.
The BRS leader claimed that Congress leaders were openly distributing money to influence voters. He criticised the State Election Commission for failing to act on the violations. He also accused the police of remaining silent instead of enforcing election rules.
Telangana municipal elections marred by violence allegations
Sravan said growing public support for the BRS had unsettled the Congress leadership. As a result, he alleged, Congress workers resorted to threats and physical violence. He condemned the attack on former minister Mallareddy in Aliabad of Medchal district.
He also accused Congress workers of obstructing the campaign of BRS leader Harish Rao in Mancherial. Sravan described both incidents as direct assaults on democracy and warned that law and order in Telangana had collapsed.
“If the Election Commission cannot ensure free and fair polls, it may as well issue certificates declaring Congress candidates as winners,” he said, in a sarcastic remark.
Sravan further alleged that Congress workers kidnapped BRS candidate Mamidi Divya in Kodad. In another incident, he claimed that workers disguised a BRS Hindu candidate in a burqa and forced him to withdraw his nomination. This, he said, allowed a Congress candidate to win unopposed and amounted to a “murder of democracy”.
He also alleged that Congress workers in the Speaker’s constituency threatened BRS candidates and forced them to wear Congress scarves. “The ruling party is abusing power without hesitation,” Sravan said, comparing it to “fencing that eats the crop it is meant to protect”.
Sravan demanded immediate intervention by the State Election Commission to restore transparency in the Telangana municipal elections. He also criticised Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging that the CM’s language and conduct remained unchecked despite repeated warnings.
