New Delhi: UPI users reached 55.49 crore by June 2026, the government informed Parliament on Monday. It also said Unified Payments Interface transactions rose to 24,161.69 crore in volume and ₹314.23 lakh crore in value during the 2025-26 financial year.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared the figures in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. Moreover, he said the National Payments Corporation of India operates the Unified Payments Interface under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007.
The data showed that UPI transactions continued to grow steadily over the past five financial years. Transaction volume increased from 4,595.61 crore in 2021-22 to 24,161.69 crore in 2025-26. Likewise, transaction value rose from ₹84.16 lakh crore to ₹314.23 lakh crore during the same period.
The government also highlighted the expansion of UPI services overseas. Furthermore, NPCI International Payments Ltd. has partnered with several countries to enable cross-border person-to-person and person-to-merchant transactions for Indian users.
UPI users benefit from stronger security measures
The government said it, the Reserve Bank of India and NPCI have introduced several measures to strengthen UPI security. These include risk-based transaction limits, safeguards against unauthorised mobile number changes and stricter security requirements for UPI applications.
In addition, NPCI has introduced the Comprehensive UPI Information Security Framework 2025 and the Mobile Application Security Framework. According to the government, these measures improve the safety and resilience of the UPI ecosystem.
UPI currently supports cross-border payments in countries including Bhutan, Singapore, the UAE, France, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Qatar, Greece and Cambodia. Finally, the government said these partnerships help Indian travellers and the diaspora make seamless digital payments abroad while supporting the development of real-time payment systems in partner countries.
