BJP alleges Velugumatla house demolition left 1,800 homeless

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao alleged that the Velugumatla house demolition defied High Court status quo orders and left about 1,800 people homeless.

Rao visited Velugumatla in Khammam district on Sunday and met displaced families. He accused the Congress government of demolishing houses despite court directions to maintain status quo.

According to him, nearly 600 households had lived there since 2013-14. He said the families, including labourers and hamalis, built houses near the Collectorate office using savings and by selling jewellery.

The Velugumatla house demolition left around 1,800 individuals without shelter, he claimed. He termed the action atrocious and alleged that the government bypassed due legal process.

Rao said courts had issued status quo orders several times while cases over the land remained pending. However, he alleged that revenue officials proceeded to serve eviction notices.

Moreover, he questioned the authority of the State to carry out demolitions during ongoing legal proceedings. He described the move as a heinous act against poor families.

The BJP leader further alleged that land values increased sharply after the establishment of the Collectorate office. In addition, he said a proposed highway project pushed prices higher.

According to Rao, authorities attempted eviction as the land became commercially valuable. He also rejected claims that fake documents and illegal allotments had surfaced during an inquiry by the Bhoodan Board and Revenue Department.

Rao alleged that officials used the inquiry findings as a pretext for demolition. He accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of adopting what he called a “crowbar government” approach.

He demanded that the government rectify its action and construct permanent houses at the same location. At the very least, he sought shelter for affected families under the Indiramma Houses scheme.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders organised an Annadanam programme at the site. Rao asserted that the party would continue its fight for the rights of displaced families.
