Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier 2026 to begin in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Telangana Sports Minister Vakiti Srihari and senior officials invited Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to attend the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier scheduled in Hyderabad.

Srihari, along with Sports Authority of Telangana chairman Shiva Sena Reddy and managing director Soni Bala Mayadevi, met the chief minister and handed over a formal invitation.

Officials briefed the chief minister on preparations for the international tournament. The Telangana government will organise the event in coordination with the Fédération Internationale de Hockey.

The Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier will take place from March 8 to March 14 at the Gachibowli Hockey Stadium in Hyderabad.

Eight international teams will compete in the tournament. The competition forms part of the qualification pathway for the Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026.

Therefore, the results will determine which teams secure a place in the main tournament.

Eight teams set to compete in Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier

India will compete alongside Austria, England, Italy, South Korea, Scotland, Uruguay and Wales in the Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier.

Officials from the Sports Authority of Telangana said they completed all arrangements for the event.

The Gachibowli Hockey Stadium now features an upgraded international-standard astroturf playing surface. Authorities also strengthened security arrangements for the tournament.

Organisers ensured modern infrastructure and accommodation for players and officials. They coordinated closely with representatives of the Fédération Internationale de Hockey and Hockey India to finalise operational planning.

All participating teams have already arrived in Hyderabad. The Telangana Sports Department welcomed them and provided practice facilities at the stadium.

Teams are currently training on the upgraded astroturf at Gachibowli Hockey Stadium.

Meanwhile, organisers planned heritage tours and recreational programmes for international players and delegates. These activities will allow visitors to experience the culture of Hyderabad during their stay.

Officials said the state government has expanded sports development efforts under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.

They also recalled the successful organisation of the Chief Minister Cup 2025, which was conducted from the village level and received strong participation across Telangana.

The Sports Department said it will continue promoting sports culture and bringing more international tournaments to the state.
