Vadodara: Indian Railways has approved ₹166.5 crore for a four-lane Alkapuri road over bridge in Vadodara Division of Western Railway.
The project will come up on a cost-sharing basis with the State Government. Both sides will contribute equally, with Indian Railways providing about ₹83.2769 crore and the State Government contributing the same amount.
The new grade-separated facility will strengthen road connectivity near Vadodara Railway Station. It will also address traffic and operational constraints affecting the existing Alkapuri Road Under Bridge (RUB).
The existing RUB provides an east-west connection between the Alkapuri and Kalaghoda areas of Vadodara city. However, its vertical clearance stands at only about 3 metres, which restricts the movement of larger vehicles.
During the monsoon, the RUB also faces recurring waterlogging. As a result, the existing crossing creates traffic congestion and inconvenience for road users.
The new four-lane Alkapuri road over bridge will increase the capacity and functionality of the existing road crossing. It will provide a grade-separated route while allowing railway operations to continue without disruption.
Alkapuri road over bridge to improve key links
The new facility will improve access to Vadodara Railway Station and the GSRTC Bus Station. It will also strengthen connectivity to the upcoming High-Speed Rail, or Bullet Train, station.
Traffic studies recorded more than 1,600 passenger car units per hour during peak periods. The area also has several traffic conflict points and inadequate facilities for pedestrians.
Therefore, the existing RUB no longer meets the area’s current and projected traffic needs. The four-lane facility will address these limitations and provide a more effective crossing arrangement.
The project will further strengthen road connectivity around Vadodara Railway Station. It will also improve the movement of vehicles between important transport facilities in this part of the city.
The ₹166.5 crore project represents a joint investment by Indian Railways and the State Government. Once completed, the Alkapuri road over bridge will augment the existing road network and address constraints linked to the present RUB.
