BJP opposes GHMC delimitation draft, flags structural flaws

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party opposed the GHMC delimitation draft and accused the Telangana government of pushing an anti-people proposal to expand municipal limits and double divisions from 150 to 300.

A BJP delegation from the party’s Delimitation Monitoring Committee met the GHMC Commissioner and submitted detailed objections. The delegation included former MLA N.V.S.S. Prabhakar, BJP state general secretary Dr Gautam Rao, former mayor Banda Karthika Reddy and other senior leaders.

Party leaders said the GHMC delimitation draft contained serious irregularities. They pointed out that several proposed divisions overlapped two Assembly constituencies or extended across different revenue districts. According to them, such overlaps would create administrative confusion and weaken local governance.

After the meeting, Prabhakar questioned the basis of the delimitation exercise. He asked whether population, geographical area or voter strength formed the core criterion. He said officials failed to provide clear explanations during the interaction.

Prabhakar also alleged that the authorities ignored nearly 10,000 objections and suggestions submitted by citizens during the consultation process. He claimed the exercise lacked transparency and public accountability.

BJP questions intent behind GHMC delimitation draft

The BJP leader further alleged that a private agency may have prepared the GHMC delimitation draft instead of GHMC officials. He said this raised concerns about procedural violations and external influence in a sensitive civic process.

Prabhakar accused the state government of pursuing the expansion to secure large foreign loans rather than improve urban governance. He claimed the ruling party aimed to centralise control from political headquarters, weakening democratic decentralisation in the city.

He warned that the BJP would soon launch a public agitation against the GHMC delimitation draft. The party plans to mobilise citizens and expose what it called a disorganised and politically motivated approach to municipal administration.

BJP leaders said they would continue to press for the withdrawal of the draft and demand a transparent, people-centric delimitation process in Hyderabad.
