New Delhi: Indian Railways recorded a 9 per cent rise in Freight loading during July 2026, transporting 141.3 million tonnes compared with 129.7 million tonnes in July 2025. The growth reflected higher demand from key sectors and improved operational efficiency across the railway network.
The railways also reported an 8 per cent increase in freight revenue during the month. Revenue rose by ₹1,137 crore over July 2025 as freight movement continued to expand.
East Central Railway and Eastern Railway each recorded 33 per cent growth in freight revenue. West Central Railway registered 23 per cent growth, while South Eastern Railway posted a 10.33 per cent increase.
The higher freight volumes supported industries, agriculture and the energy sector. Indian Railways attributed the growth to sustained demand and continued improvements in freight logistics.
Key commodities drive Freight loading growth
Several major commodities posted strong year-on-year growth in July 2026. Iron ore loading increased by 22.2 per cent, the highest among all major commodities.
Fertilizer loading rose by 12 per cent during the month. Loading of balance other goods also increased by 12.1 per cent.
Coal loading grew by 11.5 per cent. Food grain loading also recorded an 11.5 per cent increase compared with July last year.
Indian Railways increased domestic coal supply to thermal power plants by 20 per cent to meet higher electricity demand during the month.
The railway network also recorded steady growth in passenger traffic. It carried 63.35 crore passengers in July 2026 compared with 62.19 crore passengers during the corresponding month in 2025.
The increase covered both suburban and non-suburban services. Indian Railways said the figures reflected growing public preference for rail transport and improved connectivity.
Railways focus on efficiency and infrastructure
Indian Railways said it would continue strengthening Freight loading through better logistics, capacity expansion and modern infrastructure. It also reaffirmed its commitment to improving passenger services and customer-focused initiatives.
The national transporter said operational efficiency and infrastructure development would remain central to its strategy. It added that these measures would support India’s economic growth, improve energy security and provide reliable mobility for millions of passengers.
