NHAI discontinues KYV for cars on new FASTag issued from February 1

New Delhi: The National Highways Authority of India announced that it had discontinued the Know Your Vehicle process for cars on all new FASTTag issuances from February 1, 2026.

NHAI said the decision covers FASTTags issued for the Car, Jeep, and Van category. Moreover, the move aims to end post-activation inconvenience faced by vehicle owners despite submitting valid documents.

According to the authority, lakhs of highway users earlier faced delays and repeated follow-ups after FASTTag activation. Therefore, FASTag KYV discontinued as a routine requirement will bring relief to new car owners.

The authority also clarified the rules for existing FASTTags issued to cars. It said KYV will no longer apply as a standard condition once a FASTTag remains active.

FASTag KYV discontinued with stronger pre-activation safeguards

NHAI said it will require KYV for existing car FASTTags only in specific complaint-driven cases. These include loose FASTTags, incorrect issuance, or suspected misuse. However, without any complaint, users will not face KYV checks.

At the same time, NHAI strengthened pre-activation validation norms for issuer banks. FASTTag activation will now take place only after mandatory vehicle verification through the VAHAN database.

The authority removed the earlier provision that allowed validation after activation. In addition, issuer banks must use Registration Certificate-based checks only in exceptional cases where VAHAN data is unavailable.

NHAI said FASTTags sold through online channels will also follow the same pre-activation process. As a result, banks will complete all vehicle verification before activation, eliminating post-issuance follow-ups.

The authority said the reform reflects its commitment to a citizen-friendly and technology-driven FASTTag system. It added that shifting full responsibility to issuer banks will reduce grievances for highway users.
