Agriculture budget jumps to ₹1.27 lakh crore in 2025-26

New Delhi: The Union government increased the agriculture budget to ₹1.27 lakh crore in 2025-26 from ₹21,933.50 crore in 2013-14, reflecting a sharp rise in support for the farm sector, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said agriculture remained a State subject. However, the Centre supported States through policy measures, budgetary allocations and multiple welfare schemes. The budget allocation for the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare rose steadily over the past 12 years.

The government said it launched several schemes to support farmers and strengthen the agriculture sector. These included income support, crop insurance, interest subsidy, infrastructure funding and mechanisation programmes. Many initiatives focused on small and marginal farmers.

According to the ministry, schemes such as PM-KISAN, PMFBY, PM-AASHA and the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund aimed to stabilise farm incomes. Other programmes promoted natural farming, diversification, marketing support and digital agriculture.

Agriculture budget linked to higher farm income indicators

The government said convergence of agriculture schemes helped raise farmer incomes. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research documented 75,000 cases where farmers more than doubled their income through coordinated support.

Survey data also pointed to rising rural incomes. The National Sample Survey Office estimated average monthly income per agricultural household at ₹10,218 in 2018-19. This marked an increase from ₹6,426 recorded in 2012-13.

Consumption data showed a similar trend. Rural monthly per capita consumption expenditure rose from ₹1,430 in 2011-12 to ₹4,122 in 2023-24. Urban consumption increased from ₹2,630 to ₹6,996 over the same period.

The ministry said these indicators reflected the impact of sustained public investment in agriculture and allied sectors.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ramnath Thakur provided the information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
