KTR issues delimitation warning, flags southern backlash

Hyderabad: BRS working president K T Rama Rao issued a KTR delimitation warning to the Centre, cautioning that any move reducing southern states’ representation would trigger widespread protests.

He said delimitation based solely on population would not remain a legal or political exercise. Instead, it could evolve into a large-scale public movement across southern India. Therefore, he warned the Centre to assess the wider implications before proceeding.

KTR reiterated that the party’s stand on delimitation remained unchanged. At the same time, he stressed that BRS would oppose any move that weakened the political strength of southern states. He argued that these states played a crucial role in national development.

He added that reducing their representation would be unfair and contrary to democratic principles. Moreover, he said such steps could undermine the balance of federal governance.

KTR delimitation warning highlights risk of public protests

KTR said southern states achieved progress through population control and economic growth. However, he noted that the proposed delimitation model penalised such performance. As a result, he criticised the Centre for considering policies that reduce representation of performing regions.

He said the BRS would not remain silent if the voice of southern states weakened in Parliament. Consequently, he warned of an uncompromising political response to safeguard regional interests.

KTR also urged the Centre to reconsider its approach. Meanwhile, he emphasised that policymakers must understand the long-term consequences of such decisions. He added that the party would continue efforts to protect fair representation.

The remarks come amid ongoing debates over delimitation and its potential impact on regional balance in Parliament.
