Hyderabad: The Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission said it will propose farm marketing reforms after inspections found irregularities affecting farmer incomes.
The Commission carried out surprise inspections across key agricultural markets. It began with Enamamula market in Warangal and later covered vegetable, fruit, and flower markets in other areas.
Officials observed that farmers faced unfair practices in several markets. Moreover, they noted that the growing role of middlemen affected price realisation.
They said the widespread intermediary system limited farmers’ access to fair prices. Therefore, the Commission stressed the need for corrective measures to ensure better returns.
Farm marketing reforms focus on reducing middlemen role
In this context, the Commission held a review meeting with farmers and stakeholders. Participants included farmer organisations, market committee officials, and commission agents.
Additionally, natural farming practitioners, ITDA officials, and media representatives attended the meeting. Farmers from across the state shared their concerns and suggestions.
Officials said these inputs would help shape the proposed farm marketing reforms. They added that the aim is to create a transparent and efficient system.
The Commission said it would soon submit a detailed report to the state government. This report will recommend structural changes to improve price discovery and ensure fair trade practices.
Chairman M. Kodanda Reddy and other members attended the programme. Senior officials from agriculture, horticulture, and marketing departments were also present.
The Commission said the proposed farm marketing reforms aim to build a farmer-friendly system. It added that the measures would help improve incomes and reduce exploitation in agricultural markets.
