New Delhi: Indian Railways strengthened Indian Railways sustainability efforts by expanding green initiatives, including large-scale plantation, electrification, and renewable energy adoption across its network.
Marking World Earth Day 2026, the national transporter said it had planted 81.59 lakh trees during 2025-26 across all zones. The plantation drive covered railway tracks, stations, and available land, improving green cover and reducing carbon emissions. It also helped prevent soil erosion and enhanced passenger comfort.
The Railways said it had electrified 99.6% of its Broad Gauge network, reaching 69,873 route kilometres by March 2026. This shift reduced diesel use and lowered dependence on imported crude oil amid global uncertainties. In 2024-25 alone, it saved 178 crore litres of diesel compared to 2016-17 levels.
The organisation also expanded sanitation measures by installing over 3.66 lakh bio-toilets in passenger coaches since 2014. These systems prevented direct waste discharge on tracks, improved hygiene, and protected soil and groundwater.
Water and energy measures drive Indian Railways sustainability
Indian Railways said it had installed 8,313 rainwater harvesting structures since 2016-17 to improve water conservation. In addition, 185 water recycling plants were commissioned, including 26 in the last financial year. These plants enabled reuse of wastewater for non-potable purposes such as cleaning and gardening.
It also conducted 1,944 water audits to identify leakages and improve efficiency. Moreover, 109 ponds, tanks, and wetlands were restored on railway land, helping recharge groundwater and support biodiversity.
The Railways said it had commissioned 909 MW of solar power and 103 MW of wind energy. It also tied up an additional 3,300 MW capacity to ensure long-term renewable supply.
Further, it achieved 100% LED lighting across stations, offices, and residential areas, reducing energy consumption. The organisation also adopted energy-efficient systems and received seven National Energy Conservation Awards in 2025.
It said these steps reflected a long-term strategy to integrate sustainability into operations while improving passenger experience and reducing environmental impact.
