New Delhi: Defence Ministry signed a BEL defence contract worth ₹1,476 crore to procure five ground-based mobile electronic systems for the Indian Army, officials said on Tuesday.
The contract was awarded to Bharat Electronics Limited, Hyderabad, under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. Officials said the agreement ensured at least 72% indigenous content, strengthening domestic manufacturing capability. The signing took place in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
The systems will modernise operational capabilities of Indian Army units. In addition, they will enhance electronic warfare preparedness and improve battlefield effectiveness. Authorities said the project would also support local industries involved in the defence supply chain.
BEL defence contract boosts indigenous manufacturing ecosystem
Officials said the project aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. Moreover, it aimed to reduce dependence on imports and promote domestic production of advanced defence equipment.
The project is expected to generate employment and encourage technological innovation within the country. Furthermore, increased indigenous content will help build a stronger defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The Defence Ministry said such procurements would accelerate modernisation of armed forces while supporting long-term industrial growth. It added that partnerships with public sector companies would play a key role in achieving self-reliance in defence production.
