Uttarakhand litchi export reaches Italy for the first time

New Delhi: The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority facilitated the first Uttarakhand litchi export to Italy, marking the fruit’s entry into the European market. The inaugural shipment left Dehradun on June 18, 2026.

The consignment contained one metric tonne of fresh litchi. Officials said the export highlighted the growing international demand for premium Indian fruits and strengthened the prospects of Uttarakhand’s horticulture sector.

Dehradun litchi is known for its sweetness, bright red colour, delicate aroma and high pulp quality. Popular varieties from the region include Rose Scented, Calcuttia and Bedana.

Favourable agro-climatic conditions in Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar contribute to the fruit’s quality and market appeal. As a result, growers have gained increasing opportunities in overseas markets.

The initiative also improved returns for farmers. Officials said growers received prices nearly 25 per cent higher than prevailing domestic market rates.

APEDA coordinated the shipment with support from the Uttarakhand government, exporters, farmer producer organisations and logistics partners. The collaboration helped create access to a new international destination for Indian fresh fruits.

Furthermore, the export is expected to encourage farmers to adopt quality production practices. It may also increase participation in export-oriented horticulture across the state.

Officials said the development supports efforts to diversify export destinations for Indian fruits. In addition, it strengthens India’s reputation as a reliable supplier of premium horticultural products.

APEDA continues to promote agricultural exports through market development, quality assurance measures, infrastructure support and capacity-building programmes. These initiatives aim to help farmers access high-value international markets.
