New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday witnessed the launch of UPI Greece services at Eurobank headquarters in Athens, marking a major step in the global expansion of India’s digital payments platform. The launch enables eligible users to make instant, secure and low-cost digital transactions through the Unified Payments Interface.
The minister attended a live demonstration of the Eurobank-NIPL partnership alongside Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait. He said the growing international adoption of UPI reflected global trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of developing technology-driven solutions with worldwide impact.
Piyush Goyal said UPI Greece would reduce transaction costs significantly compared to conventional money transfer methods. He added that the platform would strengthen financial connectivity while supporting shared economic growth between the two countries.
The minister is leading a delegation of senior business leaders and government officials during his visit to Greece to deepen bilateral trade, investment and commercial cooperation.
UPI Greece launch complements broader trade partnership
The visit began with discussions between the Indian delegation and Eurobank’s leadership on expanding financial collaboration and exploring new investment opportunities.
Later, the delegation attended the India-Greece Business Council Meeting and Business Forum at the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Three sectoral roundtables focused on infrastructure, digital innovation and defence, and food processing and agriculture.
Business leaders from both countries participated in the discussions and explored opportunities for collaboration across ports, logistics, energy, shipbuilding, warehousing, technology, defence, trade and agriculture. Subsequently, Goyal addressed the gathering and highlighted the shared commitment to expanding trade, investment and innovation-led growth.
The day’s engagements concluded with the India-Greece Business Summit, attended by ministers and senior industry representatives from both countries. A networking reception followed, providing another platform to strengthen institutional and business partnerships.
The Commerce Ministry said the visit reflected the growing momentum in India-Greece economic relations and reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to building a stronger and future-ready partnership across multiple sectors.
