Metabolic disease awareness needs mission-mode push, says Dr Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: Metabolic disease awareness must become a national priority as liver disease, Type-2 diabetes and obesity increasingly affect younger Indians, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said on Friday. He called for a mission-mode public campaign focused on prevention and healthy lifestyles.

The Minister spoke at the third anniversary of the Liver & Metabolic Disease Network (InFLiMeN) at the Institute of Liver & Biliary Sciences in New Delhi. The Department of Science and Technology supports the network to promote research, early diagnosis and evidence-based healthcare.

Dr Jitendra Singh said fatty liver disease, diabetes, hypertension and insulin resistance form an interconnected metabolic cycle. Therefore, India must shift its focus from treatment to prevention, early diagnosis and lifestyle changes.

He said the country’s genetic profile and high rates of central obesity increase the risk of metabolic disorders. Consequently, India needs research based on domestic data instead of relying only on international studies.

Metabolic disease awareness drives prevention strategy

The Minister said unhealthy food habits, poor sleep, stress and pollution continue to damage liver health. Moreover, these preventable factors require sustained public education and behavioural change.

He welcomed ILBS’ National Liver Biobank initiative and encouraged scientists to develop affordable screening tools and early diagnostic technologies. In addition, he said biotechnology, genomics and artificial intelligence can support precision medicine tailored to Indian patients.

Dr Jitendra Singh urged researchers, doctors, educational institutions, civil society and the media to work together. He said stronger Metabolic disease awareness will help counter misinformation and encourage healthier lifestyles.

The Minister added that reducing diabetes and fatty liver cases remains essential for achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He said a healthier population will strengthen India’s productivity and long-term economic growth.
