Congress leads in Telangana Municipal Elections 2026

Hyderabad: The Telangana Municipal Elections 2026 trends showed the ruling Congress party taking a clear lead in a majority of municipalities as counting began at 8 am on Friday.

Voters cast ballots for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations on the 11th of this month. As counting progressed, Congress moved ahead of its rivals in several urban local bodies. By 12.30 pm, trends indicated Congress leading in 53 municipalities, while the BRS led in nine. The BJP and AIMIM led in one municipality each.

In addition, Congress gained an early edge in three municipal corporations. Meanwhile, Jan Sena opened its account after its candidate won Nereducharla municipality in Suryapet district. Several ministers delivered strong results in their respective areas. However, Minister Vivek Venkataswamy faced a setback after the BRS captured Kothapalli municipality in his constituency.

Telangana Municipal Elections 2026 see hung councils in key towns

Results from Alampur, Devarakadra, Kohir, Kesamudram and Isnapur pointed to hung councils. In these towns, Independent candidates emerged as key players in the race for chairperson posts.

In Kohir municipality, Congress secured eight of the 16 wards. The BRS won five wards. The AIMIM, BJP and an Independent candidate won one ward each. As a result, Congress fell one seat short of the majority mark, making the Independent member decisive.

Statewide, the 116 municipalities account for 2,852 wards. Twelve wards recorded unanimous victories, while authorities postponed polling in one ward. Consequently, voters exercised their franchise in 2,569 wards.

The Telangana Municipal Elections 2026 ward tally placed Congress ahead with 841 wards. The BRS followed with 406 wards, and the BJP secured 116 wards. Left parties also won several wards across the State as counting continued.
