New Delhi: The 14th edition of Exercise Ekuverin began today in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The joint engagement involves the Indian Army and the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF). The exercise will run from 2 to 15 December 2025. It includes 45 Indian personnel from a GARHWAL RIFLES battalion and an equal number of MNDF troops.
Exercise Ekuverin strengthens bilateral training and operational coordination
The word Ekuverin means “Friends” in Dhivehi. It reflects the long-standing bond of friendship and military cooperation between India and the Maldives. Since 2009, both countries have hosted the exercise in alternate years. This practice shows India’s continued focus on regional partnerships under its Neighbourhood First Policy.
The current edition aims to improve interoperability in Counter-Insurgency and Counter-Terrorism operations. The troops will train in jungle, semi-urban, and coastal settings. During the two-week schedule, both contingents will share best practices and refine tactical drills. They will also work together on joint planning to strengthen their response to regional security challenges.
The engagement further highlights the growing defence partnership between India and the Maldives. It also reflects the two nations’ shared commitment to peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
