FSSAI steps up action against milk adulteration

New Delhi: Milk adulteration action intensified in FY 2024–25 as authorities tested 33,405 milk and milk product samples across the country, Union Health Ministry informed Parliament.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Prataprao Jadhav shared the details in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on February 13. He said 12,780 samples were found non-conforming to prescribed standards. Authorities also launched 12,057 cases against defaulting Food Business Operators (FBOs).

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) lays down science-based standards for food items. It also regulates manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure safe consumption. However, enforcement remains a shared responsibility between the Centre and States.

State Food Safety Authorities conduct field-level inspections and sampling. Meanwhile, FSSAI coordinates through its four regional offices and oversees compliance mechanisms.

Enforcement drives and regulatory measures

Under milk adulteration action plans, officials conduct regular targeted drives, inspections and surveillance for milk and milk products. When authorities detect violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 or related regulations, they initiate regulatory and punitive measures against erring operators.

In addition, FSSAI convenes Central Advisory Committee meetings to deliberate on policy reforms and strengthen enforcement. These meetings also help review the performance of State enforcement machinery and ensure proper implementation of safety norms.

The data for FY 2024–25 reflect continued vigilance in the dairy sector. Through sustained sampling, inspections and case filings, authorities aim to safeguard consumers and ensure availability of safe and wholesome milk products nationwide.
