Hyderabad: Heated scenes unfolded in the Telangana Assembly on Monday during the debate on the GST amendment bill, as AIMIM and BJP legislators exchanged sharp criticism.
AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi opposed the GST amendment bill, stating that the GST law harmed Telangana’s financial interests. In response, BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy rejected the criticism and said all states had approved the law in the GST Council.
The situation escalated when BJP MLAs moved towards the podium. They alleged that the House was not giving them an opportunity to respond to the accusations. As a result, brief disorder prevailed in the Assembly.
Panel Speaker Revuri Prakash Reddy intervened and restored order. Following his speech, Akbaruddin Owaisi announced AIMIM’s opposition to the GST amendment bill and staged a walkout.
Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender raised a point of order. He questioned how BJP MLAs could explain matters on behalf of the Central government.
Earlier, Akbaruddin Owaisi criticised the “one nation, one tax” system. He alleged that GST collections favoured the Centre at the cost of states. He claimed that Telangana received a smaller share while populous states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Tamil Nadu gained more.

GST amendment bill cleared after minister’s explanation
BJP MLAs Payal Shankar, Palvai Harish Babu and Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta dismissed AIMIM’s allegations. They termed the criticism baseless. They demanded a reduction in petrol and diesel prices in Telangana, citing lower rates in Maharashtra.
They also urged the state government to stop harassment of small traders by GST officials. The BJP members said ethanol blending helped the environment and defended the policy.
Tourism and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao introduced the bill on behalf of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. He said the Telangana GST Amendment Bill, 2026 aligned state law with central legislation.
Jupally said the changes would cause an annual revenue loss of ₹7,000 crore to Telangana. He demanded compensation from the Centre. He added that Telangana sent ₹2,02,369 crore in GST to the Centre but received only ₹55,630 crore.
BJP leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy objected to comparisons with Karnataka. He said the Centre increased states’ share of funds from 32 percent to 48 percent. The Assembly later passed the GST amendment bill after discussion.
