Home voting facility: Over 2.3 lakh electors approved for 2026 polls

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India said over 2.3 lakh electors have received approval for the home voting facility for the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry.

The Commission announced the poll schedule on March 15 for Assemblies in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. It also scheduled bye-elections in six states. Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will vote on April 9.

Under Section 60(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the home voting facility allows electors aged above 85 and persons with disabilities to vote from home. They must apply within five days of notification. Therefore, eligible voters can cast their vote through postal ballot.

Returning Officers approved 2,37,860 electors for the facility as of March 30. This total includes 1,67,361 elderly voters and 70,499 persons with disabilities. As a result, a large section of eligible voters opted for this provision.

Home voting facility process ensures transparency

Polling teams have already started visiting voters’ homes in different constituencies. The teams will complete the process by April 5. If a voter is unavailable, officials will make a second visit.

Each team includes polling staff, police personnel and a videographer. They record the entire process to ensure transparency while they protect the secrecy of the vote.

Moreover, officials share the list of such electors with candidates of recognised political parties. They also inform candidates about visit schedules in advance. If they choose, candidates can send representatives after due intimation.

Meanwhile, officials will provide support at polling stations for those who do not opt for the home voting facility. These services include volunteers, wheelchairs and other assistance. Thus, authorities aim to ensure a smooth voting experience for all electors.
