Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro takeover has moved a step closer after the Telangana Assembly passed a resolution supporting the state government’s proposal to shift operations from private management.
A. Revanth Reddy tabled the resolution, which the House approved, giving formal backing to the move.
Push for expansion and cooperation
Speaking in the Assembly, Revanth Reddy urged the Centre to support expansion of the Hyderabad Metro network.
He emphasised that coordination between the Centre and state will be crucial for future phases. The decision follows a review of public demand and operational challenges.
Linked to future growth plans
Currently, Metro Phase I spans 69 km and operates under private management. However, the government highlighted technical and legal constraints in extending the network under the same model.
As a result, the Hyderabad Metro takeover is expected to simplify planning and execution of future corridors.
Phase II proposals in pipeline
The state has submitted proposals for expansion, including Phase II(A) covering 76.4 km and Phase II(B) spanning 86.1 km.
These plans are central to the broader expansion strategy. Moreover, Phase II is expected to be executed as a joint project between the Centre and the state.
Assembly backs government decision
The Assembly expressed full support for the proposal and urged faster approvals for expansion.
It also noted the “special circumstances” surrounding the project and called for timely implementation.
Overall, the move marks a significant policy shift, paving the way for expanded connectivity and improved urban transport infrastructure.
