Hyderabad police file case over fabricated political content

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Cybercrime Police on Tuesday registered a case regarding fabricated political content targeting Congress candidate Naveen Yadav ahead of the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election. The action followed a complaint by TPCC spokesperson Syed Nizamuddin, who warned that the fake clippings could disturb public peace.

Police registered the case, FIR No. 1948/2025, under Sections 353(2), 352, and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Basheerbagh station. In his written complaint, Nizamuddin stated that fake news clippings were circulating on social media. These clippings falsely attributed remarks to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and other Congress leaders. The complaint alleged the intent was to mislead voters and create communal misunderstanding.

Speaking to the media, Nizamuddin welcomed the swift police response. He warned that the Congress would pursue similar legal action against any group or individual found circulating fake or communal content. “The creation and circulation of fabricated clippings during elections is a serious offence. Such acts not only mislead voters but also endanger communal harmony,” he said.

The FIR noted the fabricated political content was shared widely across Facebook, Instagram, and X. The complaint cautioned that such false content could fuel suspicion among communities and trigger law-and-order issues. Nizamuddin urged citizens to verify the authenticity of political material before sharing. “These fake clippings are meant to divide communities and damage public trust,” he added.

Cybercrime Police officials said a detailed inquiry is underway. They assigned Sub-Inspector T. Vinay Kumar to investigate the origin and spread of the fake material. Nizamuddin alleged that BRS leaders were resorting to fake news to mislead voters due to their declining popularity. He asserted that the Congress party was keeping a close watch on such illegal activities. He also expressed confidence that Naveen Yadav would win the Jubilee Hills seat with a thumping majority.
