IAF conducts joint air combat drill with Thailand

New Delhi: IAF RTAF joint exercise was conducted in the Indian Ocean Region from February 9 to 12, 2026, strengthening bilateral military cooperation between India and Thailand.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out the in-situ drill with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) as part of efforts to enhance interoperability and mutual understanding. The engagement took the form of an air combat training exercise.

The exercise featured Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft from the IAF and SAAB Gripen jets from the RTAF. IAF IL-78 mid-air refuelling tankers supported extended range operations over the maritime domain. In addition, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft from the IAF provided enhanced surveillance and command capabilities. The RTAF deployed its Ground Control Interception (GCI) element for coordinated operations.

IAF forces operated from airbases in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while Thai Gripens flew from bases in Thailand. The drill demonstrated the operational reach of the IAF across the Indian Ocean Region.

Enhanced interoperability in the IOR

The IAF RTAF joint exercise aimed to improve tactical coordination and exchange best practices between the two air forces. It also provided valuable operational exposure to participating crews.

Moreover, the exercise highlighted India’s ability to conduct extended maritime air operations with support assets such as refuelling tankers and AWACS platforms. At the same time, it underscored growing defence cooperation under the “Act East” partnership between India and Thailand.

Officials said the engagement reflects expanding aerospace collaboration between the two countries and reinforces shared commitment to regional stability in the Indian Ocean Region.
