Income Tax Department starts ITR filing for AY 2026-27

New Delhi: Income Tax Department enabled ITR filing for the financial year 2025-26 and assessment year 2026-27. Officials released Excel utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms on the e-filing portal. They announced the update through social media platform X on Friday. Taxpayers can now use both offline and online filing options for the two forms.

With the release of offline utilities, the process for AY 2026-27 officially began. Taxpayers can complete forms offline and generate JSON files for upload after verification. Officials said non-audit taxpayers generally need to submit returns before July 31.

The department currently provides seven different ITR forms based on taxpayer category and income source. ITR-1, also called Sahaj, applies to resident individuals with annual income up to Rs 50 lakh. However, the form does not apply to individuals classified as not ordinarily resident taxpayers.

ITR-4, known as Sugam, applies to resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families, and firms other than LLPs. The annual income limit under the form also stands at Rs 50 lakh. Officials said taxpayers can now access updated filing systems through the e-filing portal for easier compliance.

Earlier, the Central Board of Direct Taxes notified revised forms for AY 2026-27 with additional disclosure requirements. The updated norms include reporting rules for long-term capital gains, trading transactions, and losses from share buybacks. Authorities said the revised structure aims to improve transparency and reporting accuracy.

Meanwhile, official data showed that India’s net direct tax collections increased by 5.12 per cent year-on-year during FY 2025-26. According to government figures, collections reached Rs 23,40,406 crore during the period. Officials said the growth reflected steady compliance and continued expansion in the tax base alongside the latest ITR filing rollout.
