New Delhi: Indian Railways has approved the ₹220 crore Wadi-Raichur project to upgrade the electric traction system on the South Central Railway section. The project aims to improve capacity, strengthen operations and support growing passenger and freight traffic on a key high-density corridor.
The project will upgrade the existing 1×25 kV electric traction system to a 2×25 kV system. It covers the 102-route kilometre double-line section between Wadi and Raichur, spanning 204 track kilometres. Consequently, the section will handle higher traffic with greater operational efficiency.
The Wadi-Raichur section forms part of High Density Network Route-7. The corridor connects Mumbai, Pune, Wadi, Raichur, Guntakal, Kadapa, Renigunta and Chennai. Therefore, the upgrade will strengthen one of Indian Railways’ busiest rail routes.
Wadi-Raichur project boosts network capacity
The new traction system will improve the capability of the section to manage increasing train movements. In addition, it will support smoother operations for both passenger and freight services. Railway officials expect the upgraded infrastructure to improve reliability across the corridor.
Moreover, the project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader infrastructure modernisation programme. The national transporter continues to upgrade traction systems on high-density routes to meet rising transport demand. As a result, the network will become more efficient and better prepared for future growth.
Indian Railways said the approval reflects its continued focus on strengthening core infrastructure. Furthermore, the investment supports the development of a modern, reliable and future-ready railway network for passengers as well as freight customers.
