New Delhi: Mobile phone exports became India’s largest export item in FY2025-26, marking a major milestone as the country emerged as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The Ministry said India’s electronics manufacturing sector continued its rapid expansion, with electronics production reaching ₹13.11 lakh crore and exports touching ₹4.24 lakh crore. The growth was driven by higher domestic manufacturing, stronger supply chains and increased global demand for Made-in-India electronic products.
The mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem currently supports around 12 lakh jobs, while the broader electronics sector has created nearly 25 lakh jobs over the past decade. Women account for nearly 70% of the direct workforce in mobile phone manufacturing, making it one of India’s most women-intensive manufacturing industries.
Manufacturing hubs in Hosur and Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, along with Bengaluru in Karnataka, are providing quality employment to more than one lakh workers. Several leading electronics companies have also expanded women’s participation in manufacturing, with some facilities reporting women as the majority of their workforce.
Mobile phone exports drive electronics manufacturing growth
India’s electronics production increased from ₹1.90 lakh crore in 2014-15 to an estimated ₹13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. During the same period, electronics exports rose from ₹38,263 crore to ₹4.24 lakh crore, making electronic goods India’s third-largest export category.
The Ministry said mobile phone production grew from ₹18,900 crore in 2014-15 to ₹6.27 lakh crore in 2025-26. Mobile phone exports also increased sharply from ₹1,566 crore to ₹2.60 lakh crore during the same period, recording a 165-fold rise.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing attracted investments exceeding ₹20,600 crore as of March 31, 2026. The scheme supported cumulative production of more than ₹11.62 lakh crore and exports worth over ₹6.53 lakh crore.
The Ministry said domestic value addition in electronics manufacturing increased from 15% to 23%, supported by the expansion of more than 40 major component manufacturers and a growing network of suppliers across the country.
It said the electronics sector had strengthened India’s position in global value chains while generating employment, increasing women’s participation in manufacturing and supporting the country’s vision of becoming a global technology and manufacturing hub.
