New Delhi: India Optel Limited (IOL) has entered into a collaboration agreement with Safran Electronics & Defense to manufacture two high-precision, combat-proven defence systems in India. The partnership marks a key milestone under the Make-in-India programme.
The companies signed the agreement in New Delhi on December 22, 2025. IOL Chairman and Managing Director Tushar Tripathi and Safran Electronics & Defense Global Business Unit Head Alexandre Ziegler executed the pact. Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar attended the signing ceremony.
Under the agreement, the partners will transfer production of two advanced systems. These include the SIGMA 30N Digital Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System and the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight. Notably, the SIGMA 30N supports artillery guns, air defence systems, missiles, and radars. Meanwhile, the CM3-MR Direct Firing Sight enhances targeting for artillery guns and anti-drone systems.
Through this collaboration, India Optel Limited, a Mini Navratna defence PSU, joins hands with Safran Electronics & Defense, a global leader in inertial navigation and fire-control technologies.
IOL–Safran agreement builds on earlier MoU
The agreement builds on a memorandum of understanding the two companies signed in January 2024. It reinforces their shared commitment to manufacture and support advanced defence systems within India.
As part of the partnership, IOL will manage manufacturing, final assembly, testing, and quality control. In addition, the company will provide full life-cycle support for the systems. This approach aims to meet the operational needs of the Indian Army. Officials said the partnership combines IOL’s domestic industrial strength with Safran’s technical expertise.
Overall, the collaboration is set to boost India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. It will also improve the readiness and performance of land forces by ensuring reliable local availability of critical combat systems.
