Hyderabad: Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday accused the Congress government in Telangana of targeting university lands for private use without allocating funds to strengthen the education system.
Addressing a press meet, Reddy alleged that the state government was working in “mission mode” to divert university lands. He said the Congress was prioritising land monetisation instead of improving academic infrastructure and student facilities.
He referred to a recent attempt to flatten forest land belonging to Hyderabad Central University. According to him, the move ignored ecological and biodiversity concerns. He said the Supreme Court intervened and forced the government to stop the exercise.
Reddy alleged that after facing resistance at Hyderabad Central University, the government shifted focus to the Maulana Azad National Urdu University campus in Gachibowli. He claimed the state was preparing to reclaim nearly 50 acres of MANUU land and hand it over to private entities.
University lands Telangana need protection, says Kishan Reddy
Reddy said university lands in Telangana must be preserved for future academic and infrastructure needs. He added that campuses required open spaces to ensure a healthy and conducive environment for students.
He criticised the state government for choosing land monetisation over long-term educational development. According to him, such actions would weaken public universities and damage the education ecosystem.
“The Revanth Reddy-led administration is more interested in expanding its land bank for financial exploitation,” Reddy said. He alleged that the government was pushing universities and the education sector into darkness by its policies.
