MIM trying to sabotage Congress prospects in municipal elections: Waliullah Sameer

Hyderabad: Former Hyderabad District Congress Committee president Mohammed Waliullah Sameer alleged that the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen was attempting to sabotage Congress prospects in the ongoing municipal elections in Telangana.

Addressing a statement on Saturday, Sameer warned voters to remain alert to what he described as MIM’s political strategy during the local body polls. He said the party was deliberately targeting Congress vote banks, which could weaken secular and democratic forces in the state.

According to Sameer, MIM pursued politics centred on religion and community in the name of minority protection. However, he claimed that such an approach weakened secular forces and indirectly strengthened the Bharatiya Janata Party. He added that repeated electoral outcomes across the country had shown that this pattern benefited the BJP through vote fragmentation.

The Congress leader said developments in Maharashtra and several other states offered clear examples. In those cases, he said, MIM’s electoral interventions divided anti-BJP votes in closely contested elections and caused significant damage to the Congress.

Sameer alleged that despite projecting itself as an ideological opponent of the BJP, MIM’s actions on the ground often produced outcomes favourable to the saffron party. Therefore, he said voters should judge political parties by results rather than claims.

Congress flags MIM Congress sabotage pattern in Telangana

Referring to the situation in Telangana, Sameer said a similar pattern was now unfolding during the municipal elections. He alleged that MIM was trying to expand its electoral footprint by weakening Congress support bases across urban local bodies.

He said Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Reddy had correctly clarified the party’s stand. According to Sameer, the Congress maintained equidistance from both the BJP and the MIM, as both parties indulged in politics of polarisation.

While the BJP openly pursued divisive politics, Sameer said, MIM sustained the same polarisation indirectly. As a result, he argued, such dynamics created an environment that allowed the BJP to consolidate its political base.

The former DCC president urged minorities and secular-minded voters to critically evaluate political actions. He said safeguarding constitutional values, secularism and social harmony required unity among democratic forces rather than experiments that divided opposition votes.

Reiterating the party’s position, Sameer said the Congress remained committed to inclusive governance and genuine minority empowerment. He also called on voters to reject politics driven by division and electoral opportunism during the municipal elections.
