Minority Affairs Ministry begins Haj 2026 training for deputationists

New Delhi: The Ministry of Minority Affairs began Haj 2026 training for deputationists at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, marking the start of preparations for around 1.75 lakh Indian pilgrims who will undertake the pilgrimage this year. Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian inaugurated the Orientation-cum-Training Programme.

The deputationists will serve for two-and-a-half months in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia under the supervision of the Consulate General of India. They will provide administrative and medical support to pilgrims. Officials selected them from diverse government organisations to ensure coordinated services during Haj 2026 training and deployment.

In his address, Kurian said Haj management ranks among the most complex overseas logistical operations handled by India. He stated that deputationists effectively represent the Government of India in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, he urged them to maintain discipline, efficiency and compassion while serving pilgrims.

He highlighted reforms introduced in recent years. These include special facilitation for elderly pilgrims with companion provisions. The Ministry also strengthened arrangements for women travelling without Mehram. Moreover, nearly 600 government officials will participate in Haj 2026 operations under a whole-of-government approach involving the Ministries of Home Affairs, External Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, and Civil Aviation.
