New Delhi: National Commission for Women (NCW) has strengthened its support system by operating Women Helpline 14490, a 24×7 nationwide service that enables women to register complaints, access counselling and receive immediate assistance.
The toll-free Women Helpline 14490 serves as a simple short code linked to NCW’s existing helpline number, 7827170170. Any woman or girl aged 18 years or above can use the service to seek help. Trained psychological counsellors from leading mental health institutions manage the helpline and provide professional support.
The initiative supports the Government’s Digital India vision by offering round-the-clock digital complaint registration. It also provides referral services, psychological counselling and information on government welfare schemes. As a result, women can access assistance quickly, especially during emergencies.
Women Helpline 14490 strengthens complaint redressal
NCW said complaints received through the helpline help identify trends in crimes against women. The analysis also highlights gaps in institutional responses and supports recommendations to improve investigations and victim support.
Furthermore, the Commission uses complaint data as case studies during sensitisation programmes for police personnel, judicial officers, prosecutors, forensic experts, defence lawyers and other officials. These programmes aim to improve the handling of cases involving crimes against women.
The Commission follows a structured process to examine every complaint. First, officials verify whether the complaint falls within NCW’s jurisdiction. They then register eligible complaints and assign a unique case number. However, officials inform complainants if a case falls outside the Commission’s mandate.
Depending on the nature of the complaint, NCW coordinates with the concerned authorities to speed up investigations, monitor implementation of legal provisions or resolve disputes through counselling and mediation. In serious cases, the Commission also constitutes an Inquiry Committee to conduct a detailed examination.
Overall, NCW said Women Helpline 14490 strengthens women’s access to institutional support while promoting confidence in grievance redressal mechanisms. The Commission added that the initiative will continue to improve outreach and enhance safeguards for women across the country.
