NH-32 carriageway settlement disrupts traffic in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: An incident of NH-32 carriageway settlement has disrupted traffic on the Poondiyankuppam–Sattanathapuram stretch, prompting immediate safety measures.

The issue was reported near Vallampadugai village in Cuddalore district along the Kollidam bypass. Authorities said the affected section had been operational since March 2024.

NH-32 carriageway settlement triggers safety measures

According to officials, cracks and a settlement of about 100 mm were first noticed on April 4 over a 30-metre stretch of the right-hand carriageway. However, the situation worsened during repair work, with additional subsidence detected on April 6.

Subsequent inspections revealed bulging, cracking and horizontal displacement of reinforced soil wall blocks across nearly 50 metres. In addition, structural movement was observed in a nearby culvert.

As a result, the total settlement has now reached approximately 2.5 metres, raising serious safety concerns.

Traffic diverted and toll collection suspended

To ensure public safety, traffic on the affected stretch has been fully diverted. Moreover, toll collection at the Kothattai fee plaza has been suspended.

National Highways Authority of India officials are closely monitoring the situation. Expert teams have been deployed to conduct detailed technical investigations.

Investigation points to foundation issues

Preliminary findings suggest that the NH-32 carriageway settlement may have been caused by foundation failure due to poor bearing capacity.

Authorities have issued show-cause notices to the concessionaire and the independent engineer. Meanwhile, remedial measures will be implemented based on expert recommendations.

Overall, efforts are underway to restore normal traffic operations at the earliest while ensuring structural safety.
