New Delhi: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday launched a nationwide initiative to upgrade NHAI public toilets at toll plazas. The project aims to improve commuter convenience through cleaner facilities and better maintenance.
Under the initiative, NHAI will renovate existing toilet blocks and build new ones where required. The authority will use standard designs with durable structures and green building features. The upgraded facilities will offer safe, clean and accessible amenities across the National Highway network.
Moreover, NHAI will implement an innovative performance-based contract framework. The model will help maintain consistent service quality over the long term. It will also improve accountability among maintenance agencies.
The authority will use Internet of Things-based live telemetry systems for real-time monitoring. As a result, officials can track maintenance needs and respond quickly. The digital system will support efficient service delivery.
NHAI public toilets to use digital monitoring
In addition, NHAI will link payments to performance. Maintenance agencies must meet automated Service Level Agreements. Independent audits will verify service quality. Commuter feedback through the Rajmargyatra mobile app will also influence performance assessments.
Furthermore, all new facilities will comply with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. The toilets will include barrier-free access for persons with disabilities. They will also provide clean water, modern sanitation and improved hygiene.
Dedicated features will enhance the safety and privacy of women travellers. Finally, NHAI said the initiative will improve travel experience and set higher standards for public amenities on the National Highway network.
