Hyderabad: Indian Railways approved a ₹299 crore project to remodel the Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard, aiming to increase station capacity, improve punctuality and provide better passenger facilities.
The project covers the remodelling of the coaching yard under South Coast Railway. It includes new railway lines, additional platforms and an Electronic Interlocking system to improve train operations.
Visakhapatnam Railway Station handles around 80,000 passengers every day and an average of 113 trains. The present yard layout forces terminating and through trains to cross surface tracks. As a result, trains face delays at approach signals and platform availability remains limited.
The remodelling will reduce these operational bottlenecks. It will improve platform occupancy and allow the station to handle more trains efficiently.
Visakhapatnam Coaching Yard to add platforms and modern facilities
The project includes six new platforms and six additional railway lines. Indian Railways will also widen the existing six platforms to accommodate growing passenger traffic.
The upgraded platforms will have ramps, lifts and escalators to improve accessibility. The project also includes a new eastern entrance to the station and the relocation of the Passenger Reservation System.
Railways will install an Electronic Interlocking system across the station yard. The project also provides surface parking and a redesigned circulating area to improve passenger movement.
Officials said the upgraded infrastructure will reduce congestion inside the coaching yard. It will improve train punctuality, increase platform availability and strengthen the station’s ability to meet rising passenger demand.
