New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Tourism said the PRASHAD scheme has sanctioned 54 projects across 28 States and Union Territories to strengthen pilgrimage infrastructure, including one project in Maharashtra.
Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat provided the details in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on February 12. He stated that the PRASHAD scheme aims to enhance the spiritual experience through holistic development of tourism facilities at pilgrimage and heritage sites.
Under the scheme, the Ministry sanctioned the “Development of Trimbakeshwar” project in Nashik during 2017-18 at a cost of ₹45.41 crore. Overall, the 54 projects approved so far carry a total estimated cost of ₹1,726.74 crore.
Submission of proposals by States and Union Territories remains a continuous process under the PRASHAD scheme. The Ministry examines proposals as per guidelines and releases financial assistance based on eligibility and fund availability. At present, it is not considering any proposal for development of Shri Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple at Ellora.
Carrying capacity and crowd-flow management form core elements of planning under the PRASHAD scheme. Authorities assess pilgrim inflows before selecting destinations. To manage crowds, the Ministry has sanctioned queue management complexes, waiting halls and widened approach roads.
Facilities under PRASHAD scheme improve pilgrim safety
The PRASHAD scheme also supports installation of CCTV systems, integrated command and control rooms and fire safety mechanisms. In addition, authorities have sanctioned illumination works, pathways with rails, signages and development of approach roads.
Further, projects include drinking water facilities, toilet blocks and universal accessibility measures. These interventions help local authorities manage peak-season pilgrim movement and ensure basic services.
State governments and Union Territory administrations prepare Detailed Project Reports in consultation with local bodies and shrine authorities. They implement the projects in coordination with stakeholders, including religious trusts and NGOs.
Through the PRASHAD scheme, the Ministry seeks to develop tourism infrastructure sustainably. It aims to generate employment, boost tourism, conserve local culture and strengthen local economies across the country.
