Railways allows PwDs in Divyangjan coaches with UDID

New Delhi: Divyangjan coaches access improved as Indian Railways allowed Persons with Disabilities carrying valid UDID cards to travel in designated unreserved coaches on Mail and Express trains.

Railways said PwDs with valid UDID cards can travel as bona fide passengers. They can use SLRD and LSLRD coaches meant for Divyangjan if they hold valid travel authority. Moreover, passengers eligible for concessional fares or valid IDs can also use these coaches.

Therefore, the move aims to improve accessibility and ensure inclusive travel across the network. It also helps genuine passengers access reserved facilities without difficulty.

Divyangjan coaches rules ensure access and accountability

Railways will take strict action against unauthorised passengers in Divyangjan coaches. Officials will enforce provisions under the Railway Act, 1989 to protect eligible travellers.

Accordingly, zonal railways must issue instructions to ensure proper implementation. This step will help maintain discipline and prevent misuse of facilities.

In addition, Railways highlighted the Divyangjan Card or EPICS system. This card allows PwDs to avail travel concessions. Authorities issue it based on valid disability certificates, while UDID cards are accepted in some categories.

Meanwhile, passengers can apply for issuance or renewal through the Railways Divyangjan portal or central government services portal. Thus, the system supports easier access and wider inclusion.
