Roblox introduces age-based accounts, expands parental controls

San Mateo: Roblox Corporation has announced a major update introducing age-based accounts and enhanced parental controls for users under 16.

The new system includes two categories—Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15. These accounts will roll out in early June and aim to align content access, communication settings, and safety features with users’ age groups.

The Roblox age-based accounts framework builds on the platform’s earlier move to introduce facial age checks for chat access. The company said a significant portion of its global users has already completed age verification.

New system improves safety and content control

For younger users, Roblox Kids accounts will allow access only to games with minimal or mild content ratings. Additionally, communication features will remain disabled by default to ensure a safer experience.

Meanwhile, Roblox Select accounts will permit access to moderately rated content. Communication settings will remain available but controlled, depending on safety guidelines.

The platform will also automatically transition users between account types as they grow older. Those who do not complete age verification will face stricter restrictions, including limited game access and no communication features.

Dynamic game selection and moderation

Roblox has introduced a continuous evaluation system to determine which games are suitable for users under 16. This process includes developer verification, real-time monitoring, and stricter content filtering.

Games must meet specific criteria such as verified developers, appropriate content ratings, and compliance with safety guidelines. Certain categories like social hangouts and sensitive content will remain restricted.

The company also plans to adopt the International Age Rating Coalition framework later this year. This will align game ratings with global standards such as ESRB and PEGI.

Expanded parental control features

Roblox is enhancing its parental control tools to give families more oversight. Parents will be able to manage chat settings, block specific games, and approve access to restricted content.

They will also retain visibility into their child’s activity, including gameplay time and friend interactions. These controls will remain available until users turn 16.

The Roblox age-based accounts update reflects the company’s broader effort to improve online safety. It aims to create age-appropriate digital experiences while giving parents greater control and transparency.

Company officials said the update is part of a long-term strategy to make the platform safer while maintaining creative and interactive experiences for users.
