Sravan urges Telangana government to announce organic farming policy

Hyderabad: BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan on Friday urged the Telangana government to announce a clear organic farming policy, warning that continued neglect of soil health could cause long-term damage to the agricultural ecosystem.

Speaking in the Legislative Council, Sravan said farmers traditionally regard land as a mother, yet unsustainable cultivation practices were steadily polluting the soil. Therefore, he said Telangana must adopt structured organic farming practices without further delay.

The MLC pointed out that several Indian States were already implementing comprehensive organic farming models. He cautioned that Telangana risked falling behind if it failed to act in time.

Sravan said achieving net-zero environmental targets would remain impossible without strong institutional backing for organic farming. Moreover, he called for support to farmer collectives, improved seed distribution systems, and clearly defined government guidelines.

Organic farming policy linked to soil health and sustainability

Referring to Telangana’s rise in paddy production during the tenure of former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, Sravan credited farmers for their hard work and contribution. However, he said the State now needed a focused push toward sustainable and organic practices.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring the availability of organic seeds and sought clarity on the government’s proposed initiatives in this regard. In addition, he questioned the steps taken to strengthen agricultural extension services across the State.

Sravan urged the government to actively use Rythu Vedikas in every village to conduct training programmes and raise awareness among farmers about sustainable agriculture. He said such outreach would help farmers transition smoothly to organic methods.

Concluding his remarks, Sravan demanded that the State government present a clear and time-bound action plan on organic farming policy on the floor of the Legislative Council.
