Srisailam power generation norms row: Jupally targets AP

Hyderabad: Minister Jupally Krishna Rao accused the Andhra Pradesh government of violating Srisailam power generation norms and continuing generation despite reservoir limits.

He said rules prohibit power generation once the reservoir reaches the minimum drawdown level of 834 feet. However, he alleged that Andhra Pradesh ignored these limits. As a result, he warned that Telangana’s irrigation and drinking water needs faced risks.

He stated that the norms exist to protect downstream requirements. Yet, he claimed the neighbouring state continued operations in violation of these guidelines.

Srisailam power generation norms violation raises water concerns

Jupally said Telangana made repeated representations to Andhra Pradesh. However, he added that the state did not respond to these requests. Therefore, he described the approach as unresponsive despite ongoing concerns.

Moreover, he said elected representatives from the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district planned a ‘Vanta-Varpu’ programme at Srisailam. The initiative aims to highlight violations and protect the interests of farmers and residents in the Krishna basin.

He said the programme seeks to draw attention to water availability issues. According to him, both irrigation and drinking water supply remain at risk due to continued generation.

Jupally said Andhra Pradesh stopped power generation only after Telangana strongly raised the issue. He reiterated that the state would continue to defend its rights and act firmly.

He added that such disputes are not new. Similar issues arose in the past, including during the undivided Andhra Pradesh, when authorities explored legal options.

Finally, the Minister said Telangana would not compromise on its rightful share of water. He added that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure adherence to established norms.
