Hyderabad: Telangana Jagruthi president K. Kavitha criticised the Congress government over Telangana fiscal health on Tuesday, alleging that the state had entered an unsustainable debt cycle.
She referred to findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General and described the situation as alarming. Moreover, she said the trends reflected systemic financial mismanagement by the government.
Kavitha said Congress leaders had promised to create wealth and support the poor before elections. However, she added that the government relied heavily on borrowings instead of fulfilling those assurances.
Telangana fiscal health concerns over rising debt and borrowings
Kavitha said the government borrowed from the Reserve Bank of India on most days during the 2024–25 financial year. Therefore, she termed this pattern a serious concern for Telangana fiscal health.
She pointed out that the state raised ₹1.30 lakh crore in loans within a year. As a result, she said such borrowing indicated weak fiscal discipline.
She also said the CAG report showed that ₹6,000 crore remained unpaid after the financial year ended. Despite earning about ₹12,000 crore in monthly revenue, she said the government failed to maintain a minimum daily balance.
Moreover, she alleged that the state’s total debt rose to ₹8.65 lakh crore. She claimed this translated to nearly ₹9 lakh per household, raising further concerns.
Kavitha said the government continued to present a surplus budget despite rising debt. However, she called this a misleading claim that masked the real condition.
In addition, she highlighted the impact of untimely rains on farmers. She said districts such as Jagityal, Karimnagar, Siddipet and Nirmal reported crop damage at a critical stage.
She urged the government to conduct immediate damage assessments. Furthermore, she demanded that compensation and relief reach affected farmers without delay.
