Telangana Governor launches book on medicinal plants and nature conservation

Hyderabad: Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla on Friday unveiled Ghanam – P.V. Vanam, a book highlighting medicinal plants, traditional knowledge and environmental conservation. Authored by MLC Surabhi Vani Devi, the book highlights the importance of preserving plant-based knowledge for future generations. Vani Devi is the daughter of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.

The launch took place at the Swami Ramananda Tirtha Memorial premises in Begumpet. Surabhi Educational Society and the Swami Ramananda Tirtha Memorial Committee jointly organised the programme. Deputy Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council Banda Prakash and former minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav attended the event.

Speaking at the launch, Vani Devi said rapid urbanisation, indiscriminate tree felling and pollution were threatening ecological balance. Inspired by P.V. Narasimha Rao’s interest in medicinal plants, she said the book sought to preserve knowledge about their properties and uses. It also aims to pass this traditional knowledge on to future generations.

Governor Shukla congratulated Vani Devi and said development must go hand in hand with environmental protection. He urged people to plant and nurture trees while spreading awareness about the medicinal value of Tulasi and other natural resources.

P.V. Narasimha Rao’s legacy and environmental awareness

The Governor also paid tributes to former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. He recalled Rao’s role in India’s economic transformation through landmark reforms and globalisation policies. His visionary leadership, Shukla said, laid the foundation for progress in industrial, technological and commercial sectors.

Talasani Srinivas Yadav called for greater public participation in tree plantation and environmental protection. He also highlighted the medicinal benefits of commonly grown plants.

The programme highlighted the need to conserve India’s rich medicinal plant heritage. It also sought to carry forward P.V. Narasimha Rao’s legacy of interest in medicinal plants and traditional knowledge.
