Telangana Police warns public on WhatsApp screen sharing frauds

Hyderabad: Telangana Police issued a fresh advisory warning citizens to remain cautious against cyber frauds being carried out through WhatsApp. Officials said fraudsters posing as bank staff or customer support executives were attempting to trick people into sharing their screens and steal sensitive financial information.

The police explained that scammers often make calls claiming to offer help and then convince victims to enable WhatsApp screen sharing. Once access is granted, fraudsters can view one-time passwords (OTPs), account details and even transfer money. They stressed that no legitimate bank or service provider ever asks for such access.

Citizens urged to educate family members against scams

Officials urged people to be alert to unknown calls and never fall prey to promises of assistance or easy money. They asked the public to create awareness among family members, especially elders, about these fraudulent methods.

Police also cautioned citizens against investing based on WhatsApp messages or joining unknown groups that offer investment tips. They said fraudsters were circulating fake screenshots, malicious APK files and links designed to steal money. Downloading such files or believing strangers could result in heavy losses.

The advisory highlighted that investment decisions should never be based on suggestions from unknown people in online groups. “Do not trust unknown links, files, or strangers promising high returns. Always verify before you act,” the police said.
