Hyderabad: BRS senior leader and former minister T Harish Rao has urged Rahul Gandhi to intervene immediately over TG-Transco privatisation. He wants protection for key public-sector institutions. These include TG-Transco, TG-Genco, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and the Discoms.
In a letter to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Harish Rao alleged that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was moving towards diluting state ownership in strategic public assets. He questioned whether the reported policy matched the Congress party’s economic commitments.
Harish Rao cited the Congress manifesto of 2019. According to him, the document restricted disinvestment to non-core and non-strategic public-sector enterprises. He also referred to the 2023 Raipur Economic Resolution. He said it opposed disinvestment that could create private monopolies or duopolies.
“A CWC resolution cannot be binding in Delhi and optional in Hyderabad,” Harish Rao said. He questioned the Congress national leadership’s silence over the reported proposals.
The BRS argued that TG-Transco could not be treated as an ordinary commercial enterprise. Harish Rao described it as a critical public utility. He called it the backbone of Telangana’s electricity transmission network.
He pointed to the scale of TG-Transco’s infrastructure. It includes 400-kV, 220-kV and 132-kV substations. The network also has more than 31,420 circuit kilometres of EHT lines and 1,184 power transformers.
Harish Rao questioned the reported proposal to dilute 26 per cent equity in TG-Transco at the initial stage. He said the proposal raised wider concerns. These related to private ownership and influence over strategic public infrastructure.
TG-Transco privatisation could extend to other institutions
Harish Rao expressed concern that a move involving TG-Transco could later extend to TG-Genco, SCCL and the Discoms. He said the issue therefore went beyond a single public-sector institution.
Congress leaders had repeatedly criticised the Union government over monetisation and privatisation of public assets, Harish Rao said. They had also raised concerns about dilution of strategic public institutions. Against this backdrop, he asked Rahul Gandhi to clarify whether the reported Telangana measures matched the Congress’s national economic policy. He said the national leadership should explain its position if the proposals were consistent with party policy.
If the measures did not match that policy, Harish Rao said, the Congress national leadership had a responsibility to intervene. He sought a clear position from Rahul Gandhi.
In his letter, Harish Rao urged an immediate halt to the proposed TG-Transco privatisation and the 26 per cent equity dilution. He also asked the Congress leadership to prevent IPOs, equity dilution or privatisation involving TG-Genco, SCCL and the Discoms. His demand covered other strategic core-sector public institutions as well.
He asked the Telangana government to clarify whether the reported proposals were consistent with the Congress manifesto of 2019 and the 2023 Raipur Economic Resolution. Harish Rao further sought assurances that no irreversible decision would affect ownership or control of strategic public assets. He said the issue was no longer merely a state policy matter.
The BRS leader urged the Congress national leadership to make its position clear. He sought Rahul Gandhi’s “clear and categorical intervention” to halt the proposed TG-Transco privatisation. He also wants further dilution of Telangana’s strategic public institutions prevented.
Writing to the Leader of the Opposition, Shri @RahulGandhi ji, seeking his urgent intervention.
You oppose the privatisation of LIC and the power sector in Delhi. On what principle is your own Congress Govt in Telangana moving to privatise strategic assets like TG-TRANSCO,… pic.twitter.com/vuirKW2aEe
